The History of Foundation Lodge No. 592

The Birth of Foundation Lodge

The journey of Foundation Lodge No. 592 began on February 4, 2003, when 15 Master Masons from various lodges within the Jurisdiction of Georgia sought to expand Prince Hall Masonry in Cobb County. They submitted a petition to Grand Master Willie L. Williams, seeking to establish a new lodge. With the support of District Deputy Grand Master Charles Truitt and Assistant District Deputy Grand Master Matthew Lewis, the Grand Master convened a meeting on February 20, 2003, to discuss the proposal and evaluate the qualifications of the petitioners. After thorough deliberation, Grand Master Williams advised the Brothers to exercise patience as he considered their request.

On March 14, 2003, Grand Master Williams issued a letter of dispensation, officially granting the petitioners the right to form a lodge, conduct meetings, and receive new petitions. This pivotal moment marked the birth of Foundation Lodge (UD), with Corey Shackleford appointed as Worshipful Master, Curtis Shelton as Senior Warden, and Antonio Buckley as Junior Warden. The inaugural meeting took place on April 7, 2003, at the Smyrna Community Center, where the lodge was ritualistically opened and closed by Worshipful Master Shackleford with a prayer led by Brother Daryl Joseph.

Establishing a Legacy

Shortly after its formation, Foundation Lodge (UD) began holding its monthly meetings at the Paul E. Kelly, Jr. American Legion Post No. 296 in Marietta, GA. The lodge prepared for the 136th Grand Session in Athens, GA, and on June 13, 2003, the Grand Lodge of Georgia granted the charter for Foundation Lodge No. 592. The installation of officers and chartering ceremony took place on June 22, 2003, at the American Legion Post, where Worshipful Master Corey Shackleford received his Past Master Degree, and the remaining officers were duly elected and installed by Grand Master Williams.

Community Engagement and Growth

Under the leadership of Worshipful Master Corey D. Shackleford Sr., Foundation Lodge No. 592 launched numerous community service initiatives, including the Keep Smyrna Beautiful Adopt-A-Mile program, an annual blood drive with the American Red Cross, and a Gospel Fest. These efforts made a significant impact on the Atlanta Masonic District No. 3 and the Jurisdiction of Georgia, demonstrating the lodge's commitment to Brotherly Love, Truth, and Relief.

Worshipful Master Curtis B. Shelton succeeded Shackleford, spearheading strategic plans to enhance the lodge's presence and influence. Highlights of his tenure included the institution of a quarterly newsletter, hosting social events, and the notable success of "Foundation Day," featuring a lodge banquet attended by dignitaries such as Grand Master Willie Williams and State Representative Alisha Thomas-Morgan.

Continuing the Tradition

In 2006, Worshipful Master Christopher Parham took the helm, further solidifying the lodge's community ties. He fostered partnerships with local organizations, such as MUST Ministries and the Department of Veterans Affairs Retirement Home, providing essential support and services.

The stewardship passed to Worshipful Master Sean Radford in 2007, marking another year of success as Foundation Lodge continued its tradition of community involvement through partnerships with the American Red Cross, NAACP, and other organizations. The lodge's commitment to brotherhood and community empowerment remained steadfast.

Expanding the Foundation Family

On June 10, 2011, the Foundation UD Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Stars received its charter at the Grand Session in Savannah, Georgia, becoming an integral part of the Foundation PHAmily. With Sister Yvonne Shackleford as Worthy Matron and Past Master Christopher Parham as Worthy Patron, the chapter continues to contribute positively to the community.

Today, Foundation Lodge No. 592 and Foundation Chapter No. 587 remain dedicated to their mission of community service and excellence, leaving an indelible mark on Cobb County and beyond.
